Bloch AI has partnered with Baserow, the open-source database platform, to help accounting and finance teams move beyond the limitations of spreadsheets without the complexity of traditional database systems.

Baserow offers what many consider the modern equivalent of Microsoft Access: an accessible database tool that anyone can use, but with capabilities that go far beyond what Access could deliver. The open-source platform lets teams build proper databases, automate workflows and create custom applications without writing code.

"We've watched accountants struggle with spreadsheet limitations for years," said Jamie Crossman-Smith, founder of Bloch AI. "Version control nightmares, broken formulas, data scattered across dozens of files. Baserow gives finance teams the power of a proper database with the familiarity of a spreadsheet interface."

Unlike proprietary alternatives such as Airtable, Baserow is fully open-source and can be self-hosted, giving organisations complete control over their data. The platform supports real-time collaboration, granular access controls and integrates with automation tools including n8n and Zapier.

The partnership sees Bloch AI providing implementation support, training and custom solutions built on the Baserow platform. Services include migrating spreadsheet-based processes into structured databases, building automated workflows for month-end reporting, and creating custom applications for audit trails and compliance tracking.

Baserow's capabilities extend beyond simple data storage. Teams can create multiple views of the same data (including Kanban boards, calendars and forms), link related information across tables, and build custom applications that present data exactly how users need to see it.

"Access gave non-technical users the ability to build their own database solutions, but it couldn't scale and lacked modern collaboration features," Crossman-Smith added. "Baserow delivers that same accessibility but with the reliability, security and integration capabilities that modern finance teams require."

The platform is already in use by organisations ranging from small businesses to public sector entities. One French regional municipality uses Baserow to manage local farm produce registration and distribution, demonstrating the platform's flexibility for complex multi-stakeholder workflows.

For accounting teams, common use cases include managing fixed assets registers, tracking audit findings, maintaining contract databases, and building custom CRM systems for client management. The platform's audit trail capabilities and granular permissions make it suitable for regulated environments where data governance matters.

Bloch AI's Baserow implementation services start from £2,500 for straightforward migrations, with ongoing support available through monthly retainers. The company is offering free initial assessments for finance teams looking to understand how moving from spreadsheets to databases could improve their workflows.
